Discover The Dunes

Sitting just a short drive from the shoreline at 31 Dunes Rd, Edgartown, MA 02539, United States, The Dunes feels like the kind of place you hear about from a friend who insists, “You have to try this spot.” After a long beach day on Martha’s Vineyard, I stopped in expecting a casual bite. What I found instead was a thoughtfully curated dining experience that blends coastal comfort with polished execution.

The first thing that stands out is the atmosphere. Light pours in through wide windows, and the space balances beachy charm with understated elegance. It’s relaxed but not sloppy, refined without feeling stiff. Families, couples, and groups of friends move easily between the indoor dining area and the outdoor seating, which is especially popular during summer evenings when Edgartown is buzzing. In my experience reviewing coastal restaurants across New England, ambiance often leans too heavily into theme. Here, it feels authentic rather than staged.

The menu reflects the region beautifully. Fresh seafood anchors many of the dishes, which makes sense given Massachusetts’ reputation for some of the best shellfish in the country. According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Massachusetts consistently ranks among the top U.S. states for commercial seafood landings by value. That freshness shows up on the plate. The oysters I ordered were briny and clean, served simply with lemon and a well-balanced mignonette. When seafood is that fresh, restraint is a sign of confidence.

One standout entrée was the pan-seared striped bass. The skin was crisp, the flesh flaky and moist, and it rested on a bed of seasonal vegetables that actually tasted like they were picked that week. I’ve seen too many restaurants overcook delicate fish, but this kitchen clearly understands timing and temperature control. Proper searing, followed by a gentle finish in the oven, locks in moisture while preserving texture. It’s a simple technique, yet it requires attention and experience to execute consistently.

Beyond seafood, the menu includes well-prepared steaks, hearty salads, and thoughtful vegetarian options. A friend who joined me ordered a grain bowl loaded with roasted vegetables, local greens, and a citrus vinaigrette that tied everything together without overpowering it. That balance matters. Harvard’s School of Public Health often emphasizes the importance of nutrient-dense, vegetable-forward meals, and it’s refreshing to see a restaurant incorporate those principles without sacrificing flavor.

Service deserves mention too. Our server knew the menu inside out and walked us through daily specials, including details about sourcing. When I asked about the scallops, she explained they were locally harvested and delivered within 24 hours. Transparency like that builds trust. In restaurant reviews, consistency between what’s promised and what’s delivered is everything, and here the two aligned.

Online reviews frequently praise the brunch offerings, and I can see why. On a previous visit, I tried their eggs Benedict variation with house-made hollandaise. The sauce was silky rather than heavy, and the poached eggs had perfectly runny yolks. Achieving that texture requires precise temperature control; water that’s too hot toughens the whites, too cool and the eggs spread. It’s a small detail, but it speaks volumes about the kitchen’s discipline.

Location plays a huge role in the overall appeal. Being in Edgartown means you’re surrounded by historic architecture, boutique shops, and easy access to beaches. After dinner, it’s natural to take a stroll through town or catch a sunset nearby. That synergy between restaurant and setting enhances the experience in a way standalone diners can’t always replicate.

Of course, like many popular spots in Martha’s Vineyard, reservations during peak season are essential. Summer weekends can get busy, and walk-ins may face a wait. Pricing leans toward the higher end, which reflects both the island location and the quality of ingredients. While menus can shift seasonally, it’s always wise to check current offerings directly with the restaurant to confirm availability.

Overall, the experience blends fresh coastal cuisine, attentive service, and a welcoming environment into something that feels both special and comfortable. For anyone exploring dining locations in Edgartown, this spot consistently earns its strong reputation through thoughtful preparation, local sourcing, and a clear understanding of what makes a meal memorable.

  • The service and food were incredible. The only disappointment was the deconstructed Strawberry Shortcake that fell way short. I wish we had listened to Our waitress, Georgia who recommended the S’mores. . We left with a disappointing final course but until then everything was excellent. It is a lively family friendly atmosphere not one for a romantic dinner.

The staff were friendly and welcoming which made it easy to relax even with the kids. The atmosphere was lively without being overwhelming, and everything felt very family friendly. We left full, happy, and already talking about when we’ll be back.
